Volunteers help make Lee’s Founders Weekend successful — and green

In a letter to the editor, Valerie Bluhm writes, 'On Friday and Saturday of Founders Weekend, our Committee will continue its multi-year effort to have this event be zero-waste.'

To the editor:

This year’s Lee Founders Weekend, Sept. 12-15, will be as special as ever. The rich schedule of activities is the result of countless hours devoted by volunteers. Formal planning began in January. There’s also a tremendous need for help in the weeks leading up to and during the weekend itself.

The Lee Greener Gateway Committee is striving to have Lee look its best for this biggest town event of the year. We have a roadside cleanup scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31. The more volunteers we have, the more streets we can cover so our roadsides are as litter-free as possible. We’ll meet at 9 a.m. at the gazebo on Railroad Street (near the Post Office). Dress appropriately for ticks. We’ll provide bags, safety vests, gloves and pickup tools. We’ll wrap up at 11 a.m. To volunteer or get any questions answered, please contact me at valerie4748@gmail.com.

On Friday and Saturday of Founders Weekend, our Committee will continue its multi-year effort to have this event be zero-waste. Members work with food vendors in advance to maximize the use of compostable and recyclable products, thereby minimizing trash. We’ll set up and staff composting/recycling/trash stations during the Taste of Lee on Friday, Sept. 13, and at various locations all day Saturday, Sept. 14. We need more volunteers to help us do the best possible job of reducing trash. Work involves guiding people in properly disposing of their waste — help that is generally appreciated, educational for many, and even enjoyable. Shifts are one and a half hours during the Taste of Lee on Friday (which runs from 5 to 8 p.m.) and two hours on Saturday (we need help from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.). If you’d like to volunteer and learn more, please contact Peter Hofman at pdhofman12@gmail.com or me. We need all the help we can get. You’ll meet like-minded people and make an important contribution to the success of this year’s Founders Weekend.

Thank you in advance.

Why I’m participating in the No Kings national mobilization

We can stop Trump. To do so we need to keep reminding him and his MAGA loyalists that we live in a constitutional democracy, not a monarchy.

Donald Trump’s failed presidency

Trump was elected because people relied on the promises he made, but curbing inflation; lowering the high costs of food, gas, and electricity; improving access to healthcare; and restoring affordability have basically been ignored.

Why should second-home owners in Great Barrington subsidize well-off full-time residents?

Even if they won't be receiving a reduction, primary residents of means would still benefit from a system that levies higher taxes on second-home owners but not on them.
