News and Ideas Worth Sharing

HomeViewpointsLettersStill reeling from...

Still reeling from ZBA’s ruling on 100 Bridge St.

In her letter, Carol Diehl of Housatonic writes: “We sorely need affordable housing… hopefully… people with low incomes would be treated with the same dignity as those with more.”

To the Editor:

I’m still reeling from the GB Zoning Board of Appeals vote (minus Michael Wise, thank you, Michael) to approve the Community Development Corporation’s plan to site 45 “workforce” or low-income housing units adjacent to a waste treatment plant and facing a brownfield with no set schedule for remediation or definitive plan for development. Yes, we sorely need affordable housing.  Hopefully, however, especially in Great Barrington, people with low incomes would be treated with the same dignity as those with more. Yet there is NO WAY this situation would be projected for higher income or luxury housing — the true test of how we treat others. Whatever the next step is, let’s not let this happen.
