Volunteers invited to join school district task forces

In his letter to the editor, Berkshire Hills Regional School District Superintendent Peter Dillon writes: "In the coming months, the School Committee will start recruiting participants to serve on task forces to look at educational vision, funding and facilities. A few months later, the School Committee hopes to form a regional amendment committee to look at how the District is organized."

To the Editor:

Last night, citizens in Great Barrington and West Stockbridge approved the school budget. Hopefully, citizens in Stockbridge will do the same in two weeks. Thank you for your support. We’re very appreciative.

As you may know, the [Berkshire Hills Regional School] District is at a potential turning point. We’re excited about how we support students’ growth and we are eager to support opportunities for change.

In the coming months, the School Committee will start recruiting participants to serve on task forces to look at educational vision, funding and facilities. A few months later, the School Committee hopes to form a regional amendment committee to look at how the District is organized.

We need you to join us in this important work. Please consider volunteering in the short term to share ideas and in the longer term to help define new approaches, structures and ways of doing business. Our schools and communities are intertwined. Getting each right, supports the other. Our students, families, residents and retirees all deserve our best efforts.

Not only is the open letter divisive and destructive to basic principles of fairness, but so is the headlining and broadcasting of the letter by local publications.

Shining our way to national security

The good news is that thanks to rapid technological advances, solar power generation and storage are now cost competitive with petroleum-based sources, while being relatively free of their “externalities” of pollution, global warming, and, yes, wars.

What are we actually going to do about this administration?

What we lack is a clear, practical answer to the question every concerned citizen is quietly asking: What can one ordinary person actually do to make a difference?
