The White House is not a stage set for self-promotion — it belongs to the American people

Donald Trump insists that the new gilded décor is meant to project “power” and “status” to foreign leaders, but real power is quiet. Real authority does not have to shout. The White House has always embodied that truth through subtle beauty.

To the editor:

The Oval Office has symbolized American dignity, restraint, and democratic humility for generations.

That is why the recent transformation of this historic room into a gold-trimmed stage set is so jarring.

The space now looks less like the nerve center of a mature democracy and more like the lobby of a discount luxury hotel: low class, tacky, and utterly unrefined.

Donald Trump insists that the new gilded décor is meant to project “power” and “status” to foreign leaders, but real power is quiet. Real authority does not have to shout. The White House has always embodied that truth through subtle beauty. Turning the Oval Office into a glittering imitation of Mar-a-Lago cheapens that legacy.

Gone now is the historic Rose Garden—an American icon used by presidents of both parties. It was replaced with a stone patio reminiscent of Mar-a-Lago. Trump seems intent on imposing his Florida resort sensibilities on the Executive Mansion, ripping down an entire wing of the White House for construction of an imperial ballroom on the grounds. It speaks to one thing only: the desire to recast the people’s house into an egomaniac’s personal palace.

The White House is not a stage set for self-promotion. It belongs to the American people, not to the aesthetic fantasies of any president. We deserve better than gaudy gold trim and resort-style patios. We deserve a White House that reflects our values—not one man’s obsession with his status and pride.

Why I’m participating in the No Kings national mobilization

We can stop Trump. To do so we need to keep reminding him and his MAGA loyalists that we live in a constitutional democracy, not a monarchy.

Donald Trump’s failed presidency

Trump was elected because people relied on the promises he made, but curbing inflation; lowering the high costs of food, gas, and electricity; improving access to healthcare; and restoring affordability have basically been ignored.

Why should second-home owners in Great Barrington subsidize well-off full-time residents?

Even if they won't be receiving a reduction, primary residents of means would still benefit from a system that levies higher taxes on second-home owners but not on them.
