Patricia Maggio, born in Uhlenhorst, Germany, on November 28, 1929, died at home in South Egremont, Mass., on February 27, 2019 following a period of declining health after a stroke in 2017.
She was the daughter of Clare and William Barrett and was raised in Switzerland with her brother, William, and her sister, Rosemary. The family moved to Pelham Manor, N.Y., in 1940. She graduated from Pelham High School and the Rhode Island School of Design, class of 1953.
In 1956 she married Joseph Peter Maggio in Paris, France. Joe and Pat raised their children in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., moving to South Egremont in 1973.
Pat worked for many years as an interior decorator for the New York City-based family firm of J.P. Maggio Design Associates. Her projects ranged from stately brownstones to Manhattan penthouses. She had an excellent sense of style and an artistic eye.
Gardening was her most avid interest, second only to the New York Times crossword puzzle. Having grown up in the Alps, she was a lifelong skier. Pat also loved playing tennis, cultivating a loyal group of women friends, whom she called the “Tennis Goddesses.”
Patricia Maggio is survived by her children, Peter Maggio and his wife, Ellen, of South Egremont; Tia Maggio of Millwood, Va., and her sister and brother in law Rosemary and William Dircks of Washington, DC. She also is survived by five grandchildren: Isabella Sperduto and her husband Andy Martell of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.; Alice Maggio of South Egremont; Charlie Sperduto of Washington, DC; Madeleine Maggio of Alford, Mass.; Eliza Maggio of South Egremont; and her infant great grandson, Theodore Martell of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Joseph P. Maggio, and her brother, William Barrett.
