Nick Diller’s weather summary: April 2024 — wet then drier

The high temperatures are about the same, the low readings are warmer. It’s been the rule for all this century.

The Berkshires — A wet beginning and somewhat drier ending with near average temperatures.

That sums up the month.

The results have given us some spectacular blooms as the accompanying photo above of the Bradford Pear trees down the street from my house has shown.

The average mean temperature since 2000 for the month of April is 47 with an average high of 59 and a low of 35. But as my chart shows, while the highs are about the same, the low readings are warmer. It’s been the rule for all this century. This April low this year was 38, while the average high was 59 with a slightly higher mean reading.

The month’s precipitation was above average, by nearly a-half inch, most of which fell in the first half of the month. This continued a trend from a very wet March. From April first to the 20th, 3.8 inches fell as mostly rain and only a little snow.

But the last 10 days have been drier and the National Weather Service in Albany as well as a meteorologist friend said the Eastern Pacific Ocean near Ecuador is now beginning to cool and lose the effects of El Nino. Maybe the Old Farmer’s Almanac prediction of a warm but drier summer will come true.  After the humidity of last summer and the high temperatures, we would welcome the change. Have a wonderful month in the great outdoors.
