Kate Burke, Holly Hamer for Great Barrington Selectboard

In her letter Sharon Gregory writes: "Both candidates offer broad contributions to the Town in community and economic development."

To the Editor:

Great Barrington sets the pace for many issues in South County because of its centrality to business, health and hospital, education and other activities. The election of two Selectboard candidates on May 15th is of great importance to our town.

Candidates must have qualities of leadership. The Selectboard is responsible for hiring and evaluating the Town Manager. Selectboard members need to do diligent research and analysis of the issues. They must be able to incorporate public input and have attentiveness to the implications of long- and short-term fiscal policies and finally, the courage to make difficult decisions.

I recommend two candidates to round out the Great Barrington Select Board: Holly Hamer and Kate Burke. Both offer diverse backgrounds that would contribute to building the future of our town. Their sensitivity to economic development issues would fill a void on the Board.

I have known Holly Hamer for two decades since she co-owned a retail establishment on Railroad Street. I’ve seen her develop while serving on the Library Board of Trustees and Friends as well as during her involvement in many issues important to the Town. Her diligence in attending many, varied committee and board meetings has given her a valuable civic literacy in how our town government works.

Kate Burke is a South County native, now managing the Great Barrington Farmers Market. Having worked in a variety of food establishments while raising a young family, she has first-hand experience in meeting the challenges of our young families and a small businesses. With a BFA degree in ballet, she is also sensitive to and supportive of the cultural assets of our area.

Both offer broad contributions to the Town in community and economic development. Please vote for Holly Hamer and Kate Burke for Selectboard on May 15th.
