Sheffield — The Housatonic Valley Art League will host a conversation with Anthony Baus on the growing interest in realism in contemporary art on Friday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Bushnell-Sage Library. A Q&A with refreshments will follow.
Mr. Baus, an instructor in the technique of Renaissance perspective at the Grand Central Atelier in New York City, will speak on the rediscovery of single focus perspective in the 15th century that gave us the brilliant works of DaVinci, Raphael and Michelangelo, moving art out of the Middle Ages into the Renaissance until the shift back to multiple perspective is seen again with Cezanne and the Impressionists. Mr. Baus’ own work grows from his mastery of these perspective techniques.
A recent show at the Robert Simon Gallery in New York City during Master Drawings Week in January 2019 cemented Baus’ reputation in classical realism as a bridge to his personal contemporary work. Susan Bachelder, a member of the HVAL, will host the conversation and Q&A. This talk is partially funded by a grant from the Society for Classical Studies.
A workshop on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bushnell-Sage Library will introduce the technique of single focus perspective with nothing but a T-square, ruler, paper and pencil. Registration is $110, and scholarships are being offered to students wishing to attend.
Please contact Susan Bachelder at spbach@aol.com or call (413) 528-6505 to register and for further information.
