Great Barrington Fire Department responds to Housatonic fire

No injuries were reported.

Housatonic — The Great Barrington Fire Department responded to a structure fire on 205 North Street at around 12:38 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17.

According to a press release issued by the department, flames were seen coming from a roof of a residential structure.

Police units arrived on the scene and reported that the fire appeared to be contained to the roof and attic area.

“However, an injured occupant was reported to be on the second floor,” according to the department’s press release. “Recognizing the limited manpower and water supply, Fire Chief Scott Turner immediately requested that a first alarm be struck while enroute, bringing mutual aid companies from Egremont, Monterey, Stockbridge, West Stockbridge, and Alford to the scene.”

The occupant of the building, who was not identified in the press release, was assisted out of the structure by Great Barrington Police Officers Andres Huertas and Elias Casey.

It was eventually discovered that light smoke came from the attic and surrounded the wood stove chimney area.

“Great Barrington Engine 3, staffed with three members, arrived shortly thereafter and initiated an aggressive interior attack in the attic space,” the department stated. “Crews were able to quickly stop further fire extension and contain the incident. Additional personnel and mutual aid companies arrived and assisted in fully extinguishing and securing the structure. The Great Barrington Fire Department responded with seven members utilizing two engines and one ladder truck. Scene support was provided by Southern Berkshire Ambulance, Great Barrington Police Department, and National Grid.”

The occupant was treated at the scene by Southern Berkshire Ambulance and did not require transportation to a hospital, and no firefighter injuries were reported.

The department did not list any damages to the home.
