To the editor:
The American Legion Post 298 is in the process of raising funds to bring Sammy Lee Davis who served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Nation’s highest medal for valor, the Medal of Honor. Davis will talk to the students in The Berkshire Hills Region School District about his exploits, but more importantly about his message to youth that “You don’t lose, until you quit trying.”
He tailors his presentation to the makeup of the audience. He will speak to students in all three schools in the district and will give at least one additional presentation in the high school auditorium that will be open to the public. District Superintendent Peter Dillion is in support of this endeavor and thinks this would be a good life lesson for the students. Biographical information on Davis can be found at Mr. Davis on Wikipedia.
Finalizing the dates depends on how well we do with our fund raising. The honorarium for Mr. Davis is $5,000. He lives in Indiana and these funds will cover his and his wife’s transportation, meals, lodging and other expenses associated with the visit. We would appreciate any financial assistance you can give towards this extremely worthwhile endeavor. We hope to finalize the fund raising and be able to bring Mr. Davis to our school district soon.
Our American Legion Post 298 is a youth oriented organization. We have sponsored local students to Boys State, Girls State, The Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Program (Student Trooper Program) and have assisted the Adams – Budz VFW Post 8183 of Housatonic in conducting their Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen Contest. We also assist local veterans in need. We continually honor our departed veterans by assisting at funerals and take part in parades. Donations can be sent to the above address at P.O. Box 34, Housatonic, MA 01236
