THEN & NOW: The New Harlem Bar & Grill

The buildng was briefly operated as an auction house in the late 1970s before being torn down. Today, the site is an empty lot.

The New Harlem Bar & Grill was a popular restaurant and dance hall operated by several African American families from the 1930s through the 1960s. The property was also used as a saw mill. One of the owners was lumberman Warren Davis, a prominent Black businessman from Great Barrington. The building was located along Route 23, between Hillsdale and Craryville, N.Y. The photograph shown above was taken in 1954.

According to Hillsdale historian Chris Atkins, the Williams family (shown inside the restaurant in the photograph below) operated the business in the 1950s.

A close-up view of the building is also shown below. It was briefly operated as an auction house in the late 1970s before being torn down. Today, the site is an empty lot, as shown in the bottom photograph.
