THEN & NOW: Lee Theatre

While the first movie theatre in Lee was located in an upper floor of Memorial Town Hall, by the early 1940s, the Lee Theatre had opened on Main Street.

Lee — Residents of Lee first enjoyed going to in-town movies in 1910. At that time, an upper floor in Memorial Town Hall was leased and operated as a movie theater. By the early 1940s, the Lee Theatre had opened on Main Street, as shown in the above photograph taken circa 1943.

The marquee advertises the film “Margin for Error” directed by Otto Preminger and starring Milton Berle. The movie was described by some reviewers as a peculiar, propaganda black comedy.

According to local historian Florence Consolati in her book “See All The People,” Lee Theatre had closed by 1975. It was later torn down. The theater was located immediately north of present-day Steve’s Barber Shop, shown below.
