George Betros Sr. moved to the United States from Lebanon, and in the early 1900s opened a market in the village of Housatonic. Several years later his sons and family opened a grocery store /meat market/package store on the corner of Main and Cottage Streets in Great Barrington. Grandson George Betros took over management of the store in 1952 after serving in the Navy. He is shown in the 1989 photograph above shoveling snow in front of his store. Betros served as president of the Great Barrington Little League. He was instrumental in starting the Women’s Softball League in Great Barrington and was voted “Man of the Year” in 1980 by the Great Barrington Police Association for his involvement in youth sports. After Betros’ death in 2010, his store was remodeled and is now home to Lennox Jewelers.
