Sheffield group looking for artists to ‘Draw the Hall’

Dewey Memorial Hall has announced its "Draw the Hall" contest in search of a depiction of the building with bold lines blocks of white against black that will be able to be be easily reproduced on letterheads, merchandise, or on the organization's website. The winner of the contest will receive a $200 gift card from JWS Art Supplies.

Sheffield — The local group that operates Dewey Memorial Hall has announced its “Draw the Hall” contest.

According to its website, the hall was built in 1887 and, over the years, has been used for numerous community events including dances, concerts, and community discussions.

According to Dewey Hall Board President Beth Carlson, many artists have drawn the historic building over the years. However, she said the drawings cannot be adequetly reproduced on letterheads, merchandise, or on the organization’s website. “They don’t reproduce well at all,” Carlson said to The Berkshire Edge. “We are using one of the previous drawings as a logo, but we are looking for something that is simpler, cleaner, and will reprint better. We are looking for a drawing with blocks of white versus black, that has thicker lines, along with more texture and details.”

The winner of the contest will get a $200 gift card from JWS Art Supplies.

“This is a historic building that has been a community center since it was built,” Carlson said. “We want our entrants to keep it simple in their submissions. We just want art that has bolder lines and blocks of color, but black and white would be preferred.”

The contest is for all ages, and acceptable mediums are pen and ink drawings, paintings, woodcuts, screenprints, and digital art.
