Marie DeAngelis Carr, 88

Her iron will and strength of character were traits well admired by all who knew her. With her quick wit and a twinkle in her eye, one couldn't help but be charmed by a woman who overcame so much in her long life against very big odds.

Southfield — Marie (DeAngelis) Carr, 88, of Southfield, Massachusetts, wife of the late Edwin H. Carr Sr., passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 11, 2014 at Berkshire Medical Center after a short illness.

Marie was born January 31, 1926 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Marie and Ed worked tirelessly and selflessly to raise seven children. When Ed passed away 35 years ago, well before his time, Marie continued on alone, working many long hours at several jobs to see that her family had everything they needed and more. She was well loved and trusted by her employers many of whom were influential people, and who often argued about who would be fortunate enough to retain her services.

Marie was a pillar of strength, fiercely independent, humble, very proud and her integrity was second to none. Even as her health failed, she amazed the health professionals time and time again with her ability to defy all odds and bounce back from whatever obstacle that got in her way. Her iron will and strength of character were traits well admired by all who knew her. With her quick wit and a twinkle in her eye, one couldn’t help but be charmed by a woman who overcame so much in her long life against very big odds.

Marie is survived by her children, Edwin H. Carr Jr., wife Barbara of Sheffield; Joan Moore, husband Richard, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Marion McIntyre, husband Glenn, of Weatogue, Conn.; Michele Wolfe, husband Dan, of Sheffield; and Dana Carr of Lawrenceberg, Tenn., and their families.

Marie also leaves her siblings Arthur DeAngelis of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; Cathy Slater and her husband Byron, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; and Patricia Buck of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; numerous grandchildren, great grand children, nieces and nephews — including Larry Couch and his wife, Candace, from Turner’s Falls, Mass., and her lifelong friend, Betty Busick of West Park, N.Y.

Along with her husband Ed she was predeceased by her son Joseph R. Carr.

A graveside service for Marie Carr will be held on Friday, October 17 at 1 p.m. at Townhouse Hill Cemetery in South Egremont, Mass.

There will be no calling hours.
