Hellmut Wohl, 89, of Williamsville, professor of art history

His scholarship focused primarily on early Italian Renaissance and early 20th-century European art, and he curated a number of major exhibitions of contemporary Portuguese artists.

Hellmut Wohl, a long-time resident of Berkshire County, died peacefully May 8 at home in Williamsville. Hellmut was born  Sept. 17, 1928, in Berlin, Germany, and immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was a boy. He attended Avon Old Farms School and Harvard College, and, after receiving his Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, was a professor of history of art at Yale, Cooper Union, and Boston University. His scholarship focused primarily on early Italian Renaissance and early 20th-century European art, and he curated a number of major exhibitions of contemporary Portuguese artists. He came to live in Stockbridge in 1966 with his wife, Alice Sedgwick Wohl, and their son, Matthew, and, in 1998, moved to Long Pond Road in Williamsville.

He is survived by Alice and Matthew ,and by his daughters Ann Wohl and Maika Johnson, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to HospiceCare of the Berkshires, especially to Danielle, Andrea, Audrey and Linda, and to Jill Hennessy who helped them, for all the care, support and human kindness.
