Harry ‘Haywire’ Hughes, 71, of South Egremont

He previously owned the Harry Hughes and Son Excavating Company, and he also worked for other area excavating companies.

Harry “Haywire” Hughes, 71, of South Egremont died Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, at Fairview Commons Nursing Center with his loving family by his side. He was born June 18, 1948, in Great Barrington, the son of Harold and Katina Dellea Hughes. He attended local schools. Harry was a heavy equipment operator who most recently worked for Orvie Garrett in Mount Washington. He previously owned the Harry Hughes and Son Excavating Company, and he also worked for other area excavating companies. Harry enjoyed stock car racing and was also a driver. He also enjoyed all motor sports.

Harry leaves his son, Timothy, and wife Jill, of North Egremont; half-brother Louis Rossi of Alford; and granddaughter Caitlin Hughes.

In keeping with Harry’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. Expressions of sympathy in Harry’s memory may be made to the Egremont Volunteer Fire Department in care of the Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, which was entrusted with the arrangements.
