Arthur Warton Schwartz died at home in Stockbridge on March 5, 2026, after a long illness, with family and his faithful care team at his side. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Virginia (Ginger) Haggerty Schwartz.

Arthur was born to Lucy Swann and Herman Livingston Schwartz, on April 25, 1940. in Glen Cove, N.Y. He attended Greenvale, St. Marks School, and the Lawrenceville School. Arthur graduated from Princeton University in 1963, where he was a member of the Cottage Club and played on the varsity hockey and golf teams. He went on to earn a master’s in architecture in 1965.
A career architect, his influence can be seen in buildings in New Jesey, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Florida. Arthur followed his passion for golf all his life, winning tournaments around the country and Europe, culminating with the Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship in 1995 on his home course in Stockbridge. Together with his wife Ginger, he co-founded and chaired the Library Golf Tournament that raises funds for both the Lenox and Stockbridge libraries.
Arthur was a past president of the Lenox Club, the Stockbridge Golf Club, and the Laurel Hill Association. He was particularly proud to serve as president of the Otsego Golf Club, a course he had played on each summer for the past 80 years, and for which he still holds the course record.
Schwartz was a direct descendant of Robert Livingston, a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, and Theordore Sedgwick, a member of the Continental Congress and speaker of the House of Representatives. It was his great joy to connect family members and to research and share family history. He combined his love of golf and history in his tenure leading the Schwartz Family Golf Tournament, an annual event started by his grandfather in 1933, now in its 93rd year.
Arthur is survived by his son Arthur II (Tony); his daughter Julie; his grandchildren, Lucy, Penelope, and Arthur III; and fond cousins from all branches of his family.
