THEN & NOW: The Glendale School in Stockbridge

Although the school was closed in 1944 and the building demolished in 1957, remnants of the school's sizable outhouse can still be seen along Route 183.

The early 1900s photograph shown above depicts the public school which stood in the Glendale hamlet of Stockbridge. According to local historian Joshua Hall, a smaller school was built on this site in 1868. It was later remodeled, enlarged, and reconfigured as shown above and in the illustration below.

The structure housed four classrooms, two on each floor. Consolidation, as well as the cost of coal for heating, and needed repairs were given as the reason for shutting down the school in 1944. The building was sold in 1956, but the town kept ownership of the land. An effort to preserve the building was made, but failed. It was demolished in 1957. The town sold the land to a neighbor in 1965.

The two photos shown below point out the site today along Route 183. Directly across the street from the school site was the sizable outhouse, which has now mostly collapsed as shown in the bottom two photos taken in 2020 and 2022.
