Serenity, space, privacy, and stunning views in a modernist Berkshire oasis

Gladys Montgomery of William Pitt Sotheby's International Realty offers a stunning oasis with serenity, breathtaking views, and a location convenient to dining, cultural venues and outdoor activities.

At the crest of a wooded hill is a place made of space, light, and views. A home where you can glide barefoot over polished wood floors enjoying long views across the treetops to distant mountains spanning three states. This is a true getaway, where you are serenaded by birdsong, visited by white-tailed deer, entranced by a bald eagle soaring overhead. It features 12 rooms, generous spaces for entertaining, 5 Bedrooms with baths, quality details including two Tulikivi soapstone units, plus central air in the primary suite and tatami room. Set on 77 pristine acres, just up East Hill from the Southfield Store, it is truly a place away, yet convenient to fine dining, cultural venues, all the summer and winter recreation one could possibly want. Welcome to the Berkshires and life as it should be.

What’s the most compelling thing about this property?

The serenity, privacy, and extraordinary views set this home apart. There’s a feeling of luxury as you experience the space, the flow of the rooms, the quality of the finishes, and the views to the vistas visible from virtually every room. It’s a unique, exceptional place.

For whom is this house perfect?

This is the ideal setting for discerning buyers who want a sophisticated, relaxing getaway within easy reach of fine dining, cultural venues, and year-round recreation.

What’s the most fun thing to do within five miles of this house?

Eat, enjoy events at the New Marlborough Meeting House, and explore Sandisfield State Forest and York Lake. For eateries… you are just uphill from the Southfield Store, a few minutes from the Old Inn on the Green and Gedney Farm, and a short drive to Cantina 299; Great Barrington is just 25 minutes away. Events at the Meeting House include a farmer’s market, Music & More, and art exhibits. Recreational opportunities abound in the Sandisfield State Forest, and skiing is only 15 minutes away at Ski Butternut.

If this house could talk, what secret would it tell about its history?

This house would tell you that it was designed and built for a couple who lived abroad for a number of years. They introduced Asian influences–not only in details like the arched bridge that leads to my front door, the Japanese tatami flooring in one of the rooms, and sleek woodwork–but also in how I relate to my setting. Because they respected the landscape’s natural features, they created separate spaces for the lower-level bedroom/family room, snug, storage, and systems. They also chose two Tulikivi wood-burning soapstone fireplaces from Finland–the one in the kitchen can serve as a pizza oven.
