A Rare Find: Beautiful historic brick side-entry Federal In Richmond

Gladys Montgomery of William Pitt Sotheby's International Realty offers a truly exceptional antique home.

Rare temple-and-wing brick Federal, privately set amid mature trees and shrubs. This Richmond landmark comprises beautiful double parlors with 5 fireplaces, kitchen with original fireplace, butler’s pantry, and sunroom on the first floor; 3 bedrooms (2 with fireplaces) plus home office and 2 baths on the second. Once owned by artist, illustrator, and printmaker Albert Sterner, its crowning features are a hand-done chiaroscuro mural of the Erie Canal in the front hall, incised beams in the kitchen, wide-board floors, six-over-six window. The owners restored key elements, such as new, historically accurate exterior lighting and entry doors with brass block locks; they installed radiant heat beneath the exterior path for good winter footing. A truly exceptional antique home!

What’s the most compelling thing about this property?

It’s a brick side-entry Federal—a rare thing in the Berkshires. The exterior is captivating, as are the interiors and its story.

For whom is this house perfect?

A discerning buyer who wants an antique home that is like no other.

What’s the most fun thing to do within five miles of this house?

Apple picking and cider donuts at Bartlett’s Orchard, and Richmond Pond for swimming and kayaking!

If this house could talk, what secret would it tell about its history?

It would say, “I was built in 1820, as the Federal period was transitioning to Greek Revival, so you can see details of each style here. My owner in 1825 was Albert Sterner, a nationally recognized artist; to celebrate the centennial of the Erie Canal, he painted a beautiful chiaroscuro mural in my front entry hall. I love that every owner since then has kept that, taken good care of me, and respected my history.”
