Margaret Pothul, 96, of Great Barrington

Initially Margaret and Joseph Pothul purchased a large tract of land off Lake Avenue in Great Barrington and built their family home, the first on Pothul Drive.

Margaret Wool Pothul, 96, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Fairview Commons. Born Sept. 12, 1921, in Mount Vernon, New York, she was the daughter of Anthony and Ida Moccio Wool. She attended local schools and graduated from the former Searles High School with the class of 1939. She also attended Berkshire Community College.

She married Joseph Pothul May 29, 1941, and they enjoyed 70 years of marriage together. Initially they purchased a large tract of land off Lake Avenue in Great Barrington and built their family home, the first on Pothul Drive. They later developed the land, and today more than a dozen homes grace that same street. Margaret was primarily a homemaker, proudly raising her four children. She also enjoyed music, dancing, cooking and crocheting. She held her beloved friendships close to her heart and loved story telling with those friends. Margaret and Joe traveled extensively throughout Italy during their retirement and enjoyed wintering in Florida.

Margaret is survived by her four children: Deanna Tennison and Ronald Pothul both of Florida, Anthony Pothul of North Carolina and Joseph Pothul of Great Barrington; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Pothul Oct. 2, 2012.

Funeral services for Margaret W. Pothul will be held Tuesday, March 13, at 10 a.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington, conducted by Rev. William Murphy. Candace Gerard, 80, formerly of Great Barrington

Funeral services for Candace Gerard will be held on Friday March 20, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Birches-Roy Funeral Home, with Reverend William P. Murphy officiating. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, March 20, from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thomas B. Finn Jr., 75, of Pembroke, Mass.

A celebration of life will be held in his honor on March 28 at Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston, Mass.

Laurie Platt Winfrey Shnayerson, 83, of Hillsdale, N.Y.

The family plans a private memorial and asks that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Roeliff Jansen Community Library.
