News and Ideas Worth Sharing

HomeArts & EntertainmentIt is laughter...

It is laughter we are after

Soda Jerk’s rogue documentary impulse mesmerizes.

Dear Reader: Woman on the Verge is doing her level best to keep it together through Election Day and beyond, which I know you know. After all, we are looking at November 2024, not August 1914.

So imagine my surprise when I received Le Cinéma Club’s weekly email last Friday, featuring a 70-minute musical-horror-satire called “Hello Dankness.” When I watched it Sunday morning, I laughed so hard I nearly peed myself. Just look at these insane posters:

Here is how Le Cinéma Club described “Hello Dankness”:

A suburban stoner musical that offers a sharp-witted tour of the American political landscape beginning with Trump’s election in 2016. Bringing together cursed clips like the Kendall Jenner Pepsi Ad and films such as The Burbs and Robocop that speak to the current political climate, the artist duo Soda Jerk constructs a satirical analysis of a political order that is falling apart under the cumulative weight of the Internet. The hilarious collage film is a fitting document for the historical vibe shift that has led the U.S. into the realm of fake news and PizzaGate.

Meanwhile, the film’s website notes this:

Utilizing extensive rotoscoping and digital VFX, the feature length narrative has been grafted together from almost one thousand film, television and audio sources.

If you want to laugh ’till it hurts, go to Le Cinéma Club’s website and watch “Hello Dankness” for free before they share a new film on Friday.

In the meantime, three other movies are playing in an agonizing loop in my head. They are: “Donnie Darko,” “A Few Good Men,” and “Dr. Strangelove.” Go figure.

Nevertheless, I will see “Conclave” this weekend and have heard great things about it. Likewise, I caught “We Live in Time” last weekend, a well-acted, contemporary take on grief and loss, as well as love and life.

Mostly though, I am getting out the vote for Kamala Harris and down-ballot Democrats everywhere.

Until next week, take good care and enjoy the show! Madame President is going to the Oval Office, and I can hardly wait!
