News and Ideas Worth Sharing

Do you have a love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day?

Does Feb. 14 fill you with dread?

If you have a love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day, remember Cupid is just a cherubic boy. Like everyone I know, he does the best he can. Simply put: There is no reason to dread the red roses, the box of chocolates, or the iconic pastel sweethearts made for years by the New England Confectionery Company (AKA Necco).

JLo’s in love, and you should be, too.

That’s right, Woman on the Verge has circled February 16 on her calendar so I can catch the latest from the “Gigli” actor this Friday night via Amazon Prime. Of course, JLo’s co-star then was a guy named Ben, who is now her real-life husband. What a difference a couple decades can make.

If you were one of the 123.4 million people who watched the Super Bowl on Sunday night, you saw not only Taylor and Travis’s post-championship embrace, but also Bennifer’s DunKings commercial. As my sixth grade teacher always used to say, people have strange ways of showing affection. And Ben Affleck is clearly a man in love.

Not a football fan myself, I admit to watching the entire game last weekend. Of course, the first half was boring until the DunKings spot aired during the second quarter.

Naturally, Matt Damon accompanied Ben, as did Tom Brady. Esquire called it the best Super Bowl commercial this year—and said the BADCU (Ben Affleck Dunkin’ Cinematic Universe) is expanding. For her part, JLo played it straight; she looked unamused when Ben and his entourage crashed her studio workplace.

Nevertheless, Usher ushered in the second half and the real excitement began. The Chiefs tied it up, took the lead, lost the lead, and then went into overtime before winning it all in the final seconds of the game.

While I will never understand the rules of football, I do like a good competition. And who can forget JLo’s halftime show with Shakira in Miami four years ago?

Good news: JLo’s “This is Me…Now: A Love Story” will surely remind us why we all love her so much. Check it out on Amazon Prime starting Friday.

Starting Saturday, Woman on the Verge is going to wrap up her final pre-Oscars viewing. Thus will I also see “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest” over the holiday weekend. This will leave “Past Lives,” a veritable love story now streaming on multiple platforms.

In JLo-speak, “This Is Me…Then” and “This Is Me…Now.” A woman in love, a woman on fire, a woman always on the verge.

“The Zone of Interest” is playing at the Triplex Cinema. “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest” are playing at The Moviehouse in Millerton.

Wishing you all a very Happy V-Day!

You know what to do: Get up, get dressed, and go to the movies!

MAHLER FESTIVAL: First day, First Symphony

I came to Amsterdam to listen to all of Gustav Mahler’s 10 symphonies by some of the world’s greatest orchestras, one each day, consecutively, and his ‘Song of the Earth’, but especially the four movements that comprise his First Symphony.

CONCERT REVIEW: An airy spirit comes to Earth, with flutes, at Tanglewood

While audiences come to concerts expecting to hear a selected menu of scores played as written by (frequently) absent composers, here we were confronted with a totally integrated experience of instrumental and vocal sound, many spontaneously created, as well as lights, body movement, and theater.
