Stockbridge — The work on the book goes slowly, but last night I got a reprieve. Across the street from me, Naumkeag was lit up like a fairyland. The Trustees of Reservations created a winter wonderland as part of their “Winterlights at Naumkeag” celebration. Quite right to emphasize light: It welcomes all. Lights are the heart of Christmas decorations, Chanukah is called the “Festival of Lights” and a seven-branch candelabra is a prominent feature symbolizing the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
I entered the grounds and then the house. I was transported to a time in life when we still believe in magic, when smiles do beam and the only appropriate words are “ooh” and “ah.”
Curator Mark Wilson told me it took six to 10 people working every day all day for 14 days to string that many lights. They did not miss a branch, a shrub or a man-made structure. We discussed and agreed that Old Joe Choate and daughter Mabel would have loved it. I loved it. Thank you, Naumkeag.
“Winterlights at Naumkeag” opens to the public Friday, Nov. 23. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. It runs through Sunday, Dec. 30. Admission is $12 for members and $17 for non-members. Go see. Go be a kid again.
