To the editor:
I admire Pope Leo for having the moral courage to speak out about Donald Trump. For years, far too many faith leaders in this country have avoided taking a stand, even as Trump’s behavior has consistently violated the values they preach—compassion, honesty, dignity, and care for the poor, disabled, and marginalized. His racist remarks, misogynistic actions, encouragement of violence, and habitual dishonesty are well documented, yet most spiritual leaders have chosen silence over responsibility.
Equally troubling has been the lack of open disapproval from foreign leaders who have clearly been intimidated by Trump’s vindictive threats of tariffs and retaliation. The world has seen this pattern before: leaders who remain publicly quiet out of fear, allowing harmful behavior to grow unchecked—a dynamic reminiscent of how nations hesitated to confront Hitler in the 1930s. History has shown us the danger of silence in the face of bullying.
This is why Pope Leo’s voice matters. He is demonstrating that moral leadership requires more than prayer and polite statements; it demands the courage to call out wrongdoing, regardless of political risk. He has reminded us that ethical principles are not partisan and that protecting human dignity must remain the central task of any spiritual leader.
At a time when so many leaders, domestic and global, are reluctant to speak plainly, Pope Leo has done what conscience requires: He has stood up for what is right.
