Why I see my ‘loss’ as a win…

Far more important to me than becoming moderator are these "wins": Because of this campaign, far more people participated in this municipal election.

To the editor:

The number of votes cast in Lenox was huge for a Municipal Election: more than 600. (An average year—with no one running opposed—is around 130) For Moderator, Mr. McNinch got 497 votes; I received 111.

It was expected that Lenox natives would close ranks for their guy, who has one of the oldest family names in town, and they did not disappoint! I had hoped for over 100 votes—which was achieved.

Far more important to me than becoming moderator are these “wins”: Because of this campaign, far more people participated in this municipal election. Last week’s town meeting incorporated many suggestions that I made to run more efficiently than the debacle that was last December’s special town meeting. And the Moderator waited for all to enter before starting this time. All wins for democracy …

I was proud to present 2 citizens petitions on behalf of the Lenox Town Democratic Committee to make meetings more accessible for all and provide more consistency between quorum and signature requirements for town meetings and special town meetings—which were well received by the citizens.

Now, let’s keep pushing for an ADA officer for Lenox to afford disabled persons (that cannot travel) their full rights to participate in town meetings.
