News and Ideas Worth Sharing

HomeViewpointsWe've got 12...

We’ve got 12 years. What can we do?

The loss of life in every conceivable way is truly beyond imagination, and yet that is where we are heading.

How many people really get it? I mean, when you read the words, “We only have 12 years to save the planet,” it can so easily just sound like words and not really penetrate. It can sound like some new fantasy science fiction movie. Really? Can it be true that our only home is possibly doomed?

And yet it’s true. I don’t mean we will all perish in 12 years, but it’s going to be an extremely rough ride. It’s off the charts, really, in terms of letting this in. It’s so off the charts that most people, including myself, can’t let it truly in. But even if you let it in a small amount, then you can’t help but want to do something about it. The loss of life in every conceivable way is truly beyond imagination, and yet that is where we are heading.

And still life goes on as usual: The oil companies go on, real estate goes on building close to the ocean, the deniers go on. There are even deniers who think this climate change catastrophe narrative is a conspiracy by the global west.

Thank god some of the young people really get it and they are giving all of themselves, their hearts and souls, to be heard It’s both heart-wrenching and inspiring. It gives hope and a burning desire to help them as much as we can.

So, the one thing we can do is let it in, just a little bit, and then respond.
