West Stockbridge Chamber Players make hay while the sun shines — one last time

They're playing Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Cavallini and Schubert "as you've never heard them before," but what that actually means is a surprise that the group's founder, Catherine Hudgins, will reveal on Saturday.

West Stockbridge — Have the West Stockbridge Chamber Players been crying wolf? On Sept. 12, the group gave their “final” concert performance of the season, and now there’s another one on Saturday, Oct. 10? Yes, there is, but the group’s September appearance was the final performance of the summer season, not the autumn season. Got it? Their final open-air performance of the autumn season is Oct. 10 at the Foundry in West Stockbridge. They’re playing Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Cavallini and Schubert “as you’ve never heard them before,” but what that actually means is a surprise that the group’s founder, Catherine Hudgins, will reveal on Saturday.

In any case, no, they have not been crying wolf. They are crying something more like, “Yippee! There’s still time before the snow flies to squeeze in one last program to raise money for the West Stockbridge Historical Society’s Massachusetts Cultural Council $80,000 grant for the Campaign to Restore the Old Town Hall and Saturday is shaping up to be as gorgeous a fall day in the Berkshires as anyone could hope for!” Something like that.

The West Stockbridge Chamber Players’ lineup varies with each performance, but Ms. Hudgins is always on hand to dispatch the clarinet parts and lead the ensemble. This time out, she joins BSO principal clarinetist William Hudgins, with William Rounds on cello.

So, is this really the West Stockbridge Chamber Players’ final performance of the season? It could be, but don’t hold them to it. In the Berkshires, sublime weather can come at a moment’s notice. So why foreclose your options?

MAHLER FESTIVAL: First day, First Symphony

I came to Amsterdam to listen to all of Gustav Mahler’s 10 symphonies by some of the world’s greatest orchestras, one each day, consecutively, and his ‘Song of the Earth’, but especially the four movements that comprise his First Symphony.

CONCERT REVIEW: An airy spirit comes to Earth, with flutes, at Tanglewood

While audiences come to concerts expecting to hear a selected menu of scores played as written by (frequently) absent composers, here we were confronted with a totally integrated experience of instrumental and vocal sound, many spontaneously created, as well as lights, body movement, and theater.
