To the editor:
I was dismayed to learn that District Attorney Timothy Shugrue cannot bring charges against a former Miss Hall’s teacher accused of sexual abuse because the victims were over 16, the legal age of consent in Massachusetts. This is wrong. Teachers should not be allowed to exploit their students based on age.
State Senator Joan B. Lovely’s Bill S. 1036 strengthens laws against sexual assault by adults in positions of authority, increasing penalties and clarifying that anyone under 18 cannot consent to such conduct, regardless of the adult’s role. The bill also expands “positions of trust” to include teachers, coaches, tutors, and family members. After speaking with District Attorney Shugrue’s office, I learned he supports this bill, and so do I.
We must ensure our laws protect vulnerable students. If elected as State Representative for the 3rd Berkshire District, I will co-sponsor and advocate for this important bill.
