What’s the most compelling thing about this property?
Lake Garfield – definitively one of the very finest lakes, not just in the Berkshires, but in all of New England. Living on the lake, your day begins when you wake up and see the morning sun shimmering on the water and reflecting off the mountains above. Relax with morning coffee or an evening cocktail on the huge screened porch – easily convertible to 3-4 seasons. Before noon, a kayak or canoe ride around the lake is ideal exercise and you will see abundant wildlife. After lunch, an exhilarating motorboat ride or water ski run will elicit laughter and smiles that will last the rest of the day…. At night, treasure the serenity and look up at the enormous sky, the stars, the moon and the Milky Way from your oversized dock overlooking the lake.
For whom is this house perfect?
This house is perfect for people who want to be able to move right into the ultimate waterfront luxury cabin, with plenty of room for family and friends, in Monterey, one of the most perfect of New England villages. Equidistant at 2 ½ hours from both New York City and Boston, yet decidedly a world away. Carefree, casual, serene and fun… come see the home – you owe it to yourself.
What’s the most fun thing to do within five miles of this house?
In addition to enjoying all of Lake Garfield from your own huge dock just steps away, enjoy a good book from the wonderful Monterey library (which just finished a huge, and beautiful expansion) at the Monterey town beach on Lake Garfield, where you can also swim, gather, and meet new friends. Step back in time and tour the Bidwell House Museum hidden down a dirt road where the center of Monterey was over 200 years ago. This is an authentic Colonial home, the 1750’s residence of the Reverend Adonijah Bidwell, where you can hike the trails on its 192 acres of fields and forest, wander through the heritage vegetable garden, or attend near-weekly events and lectures during the summer. Hike the trails at 12,000-acre Beartown State Forest, or nearby at Sandisfield State Forest with both West and Abbey Lakes. Visit Rawson Brook Farm for locally made delicious goat cheese, or the Gould Farm Harvest Barn for great coffee, bread, baked goods and eggs. Eat breakfast or lunch at Roadside Cafe. One new favorite place is sure to be the completely renovated and restored 1790s Monterey General, opening by summer, in the heart of the village where a cafe, a mercantile and Brockman Real Estate will all be under one roof. (We hope you will also be able to get craft beer and cocktails there or food-to-go, and shop for beautifully curated useful goods for the home and garden.) While Great Barrington is just 12 minutes away, you can drive down the old North Road and end up right at the Old Inn on the Green for 5-star food and wine; the dining rooms at the Inn are lit by candles. Let your kids run through the grass while you eat at Cantina 229, or inside a colonial barn at Gedney Farm…. All that and more is within 5 miles of this incredible waterfront luxury “cabin”.
If this house could talk, what secret would it tell about its history?
Here’s what the current owner has to say: “For starters, I spent my childhood through my early twenties at a summer camp nearby… My fondest memories were of being in a bunk and going to the lake… I wanted to recreate – with LUXURY- that experience, but this time the right way. The house is a gem – we loved sitting in the screened porch and “just listening to the quiet”, going to the lake early in the morning and just being. The little balcony off the Master is so special. We also loved the winters. Sitting in the downstairs family room and in front of the gas fireplace was just wonderful. Even with company, there’s lots of space for everybody and the home is easy to manage. We have just loved the experience!”
