North Adams — Two people died in a house fire on Monday, November 24.

According to Berkshire District Attorney’s Office Chief of Operations Julia Sabourin, the city’s Fire Department was called to 77 Francis Street at around 7:10 a.m. after neighbors reported a possible fire.

Firefighters observed smoke coming from the single-family home when they arrived at the scene, and witnesses reported that there may have been people inside the house.

Firefighters entered through the basement to fight the fire and search for occupants, locating two people inside who were already deceased.

The Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office has not identified the deceased individuals, but Sabourin wrote that the office will release the names upon notification of the next of kin.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the manner of their deaths.

The North Adams Police, State Police investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s office, and Berkshire District Attorney’s office all responded to the scene.
