Toivo ‘Captain Toss’ R. Tossavainen Jr., 79, of Housatonic

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 28, 2023 from 9 to 11 a.m., with a service to start 11 a.m. directly following calling hours at the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home.

Toivo “Captain Toss” R. Tossavainen Jr., 79, of Housatonic passed away August 17, 2023 at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington.

A native and lifelong resident, he was born on August 12, 1944 in Great Barrington, the son of Toivo Sr. and Ann (Skorput) Tossavainen. He attended local schools and graduated from the former Searles High School.

Toivo married his beloved wife, Irene (Souza) Tossavainen, on October 5, 1968, and together they enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage. The couple owned and operated Capt. Toss Seafood & Restaurant in Great Barrington for 35 years. After selling the business and retiring, they wintered in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Toivo was preceded in death by Irene in 2020.

Toivo leaves his two sons, their families, and two grandchildren. He also leaves his brother, John Tossavainen, and his wife, Cindy Tossavainen, as well as a niece and several nephews.

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 28, 2023 from 9 to 11 a.m., with a service to start 11 A.M directly following calling hours at the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230. To send remembrances to his family, go to the funeral home’s website.

The funeral for Mr. Francis T. Duke will be held on Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m., at Trinity Church in Lenox, with Rev. Michael Tuck officiating. Burial will be private in Corashire Cemetery in Monterey. There will be no calling hours.

There will be a service held on Wednesday, May 14, beginning at 11 a.m., at the Roche Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 13, from 4 to 7 p.m.
