‘Three Centuries of Photography’ exhibit on display at Berkshire School

“I think that this exhibit is an opportunity to see a photo collector’s vision,” photography collector Thomas Levine told The Edge. “These photographs can all be used as teaching tools in order to look at the photographic process over the years.”

Sheffield — Some of photography collector Thomas Levine’s collection is on display at the “Three Centuries of Photography” exhibit at Berkshire School’s Warren Family Gallery. The exhibit of 75 photographs is on display until Saturday, December 21.

Levine grew up with parents who were art collectors and would take him to art museums and galleries when he was a child. He told The Berkshire Edge that he has been collecting photography since he was young. “I have a connection to all of the photographs on display in the exhibit,” Levine said. “Sometimes I can say explicitly what the connection is; sometimes it’s just a feeling.”

Photographers featured in the exhibit include Diane Arbus, Julia Margaret Cameron, Alfred Stieglitz, and Carleton Watkins.

One of the earliest photographs on display in the exhibit is by British photographer Frances Firth from the 1860s. Photo by Shaw Israel Izikson.
The exhibit includes a diverse selection of photographs from over the decades, including some of famous people. Here is a photograph of Buster Keaton taken by an unknown photographer from the 1920s. Photo by Shaw Israel Izikson.

The gallery is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, or by appointment.
