Three arrested in Pittsfield on large-scale drug-trafficking charges

The three suspects are being charged with heroin and cocaine trafficking.

Pittsfield — The Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force have arrested three suspected large-scale drug traffickers believed to have been operating out of 30 Brown Street. According to a press release issued by Julia Sabourin, chief of operations for the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office, the suspects were apprehended on Tuesday, October 1.

The individuals arrested are Kareem Archibald, 25, of Bronx, N.Y.; Maurice Simmons, 33, of Bronx, N.Y.; and Jah’Rell J. Mayes, 22, of Pittsfield.

Law enforcement officers conducted an extensive investigation leading up to the arrests.

According to Sabourin, at approximately 12:52 p.m. on October 1, officers observed Simmons, Archibald, and Mayes walking out of 30 Brown Street. “Simmons was wearing a satchel and Archibald and Mayes both carried backpacks,” Sabourin states in the press release. “Law enforcement moved in and placed all three men under arrest. Archibald and Simmons were handcuffed without issue. Mayes fled and was later apprehended on 18 Oak Street in Pittsfield. All the bags recovered by law enforcement contained drugs and other evidence of drug dealing.”

After the arrests, the Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force and the Berkshire County Special Response Team executed a knock-and-announce search warrant at 30 Brown Street. No one was inside the property when the warrant was executed. However, officers recovered guns, ammunition, drugs, cash, and other items that indicated the house was used as a central location for drug dealing. 

The Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force recovered the following from 30 Brown Street:

  • Approximately 50 half packs (2,500 baggies) of heroin;
  • Black Sig Sauer 9mm loaded with 11 rounds;
  • Taurus Millennium .40 caliber loaded with 10 rounds;
  • Additional 9mm magazine with 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition;
  • Additional 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition in a box;
  • Approximately $5,000 in a duffle bag;
  • Approximately $11,950 in a safe;
  • Approximately $26;
  • Two functioning digital scales.

The Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force recovered the following from 30 Brown Street Simmons’ person and bag:

  • One cellular telephone;
  • Approximately 14 grams of cocaine;
  • Approximately 790 baggies of heroin;
  • Approximately $2,739;
  • A functioning digital scale;

The Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force recovered the following from Mayes’ person and bag:

  • One cellular telephone;
  • Approximately 16 grams of cocaine;
  • Approximately 250 baggies of heroin.

 The Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force recovered the following from Archibald’s person and bag:

  • Three cellular telephones;
  • Approximately 116 grams of cocaine (worth between $5,800 to $11,600).

All three suspects were arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on Tuesday, October 2, and are being charged with trafficking:

  • Heroin over 36 grams less than 100 grams and
  • Cocaine over 100 grams less than 200 grams

 Kareem Archibald and Maurice Simmons are both being held on $100,000 bail. Jah’Rell J. Mayes is being held on $50,000 bail.
