THEN & NOW: The Konkapot River in Monterey

Please note that this location on the Konkapot River is now unsafe for skating.

Photographer Don Victor captured this view of the O’Connor family ice skating on a small pond in Monterey. This site is actually a dammed-up portion of the Konkapot River located between the post office and Bidwell Park. According to Monterey resident Mark Makuc, the photograph was likely taken in the late 1970s. Notations on the back of the photograph hint that it may have been featured in the old Berkshire Courier newspaper. Please note that this location on the Konkapot River is now unsafe for skating. There is a fine ice-skating rink located behind the fire station in Monterey.

NOW: The same site today is unsafe for skating. There is, however, a well-maintained skating rink located behind the fire station in Monterey. Photo by Gary Leveille.
