News and Ideas Worth Sharing

THEN & NOW: The intersection of Main Street, Swamp Road, and Lenox Road in West Stockbridge

The present-day view shown below reveals the loss of the elegant elm trees, a wider road, plentiful electrical wires, as well as a brick sidewalk and curbing.

The early 1900s photograph of West Stockbridge shown above is still easily recognizable. The handsome Greek Revival structure featured in this view was built in the 1830s at the intersection of Main Street, Swamp Road, and Lenox Road. Now a private residence, the building once served as a doctor’s residence and office. The present-day view shown below reveals the loss of the elegant elm trees, a wider road, plentiful electrical wires, as well as a brick sidewalk and curbing. The raised sidewalk has provided “entertainment” to locals over the past few decades as careless drivers sometimes hit it while turning.
