Then & Now: Sauer’s Barber Shop

A tradition of Housatonic hair specialists.

Housatonic barber Fred Sauer was as legendary with his scissors and comb as he was with his camera. Most of the early 1900s photographs of Housatonic were taken by Mr. Sauer. The view of him at work shown above was taken in 1957 by an unknown photographer. Sauer’s barber shop was located in Housatonic’s Central Block which burned down in 1960. A&B Package and Variety Store (formerly Aberdale’s) is now at that location.

In the photograph shown immediately below (also dated 1957),  customer Raymond Moulthrop is all ears as Mr. Sauer finishes his work. Mr. Moulthrop’s grandson, the curious little guy on the far left, grew up to be race car photographer David Moulthrop.

The present-day photograph shown below features another Housatonic resident and hair specialist. Tina Lis Norton is the owner of Yonge Street Ltd Hair Salon in Great Barrington.
