THEN & NOW: Prospect Lake Park and Cliff House

Prospect Lake Park in North Egremont opened as a picnic ground in 1876.

Prospect Lake Park in North Egremont opened as a picnic ground during the nation’s centennial year of 1876. The Cliff House was built upon a lakeside knoll, providing a scenic residence for the owners, as well as a small tavern with rented rooms for guests.

Following a succession of ownership by the Van Bramer, Millard, and Siter families, the park was purchased in 1958 and expanded into a campground by Helen and Bill Carroll. The late 1950s photograph above features now-vintage automobiles parked in front of the popular Snack Bar.

Today, the entire building (shown below) is a private residence. The park remains a popular campground operated by the Palmatier family.
