THEN & NOW: Snow on Main Street in Great Barrington

According to weather records, New England winters in the 1920s saw significant snow accumulations. Recent decades suggest a trend of less overall snowfall, even when including several intense storms.

A mountain of snow blocked the view of Main Street in Great Barrington when the photograph shown above was taken circa 1920. The shovelers are not identified, but the picture was found in an album owned by the late Truman and Edith Wheeler. This view is in contrast to the present-day photograph shown below where hard-working DPW crews had already cleared the snow from a recent storm.

NOW: Here is the same present-day view with very little snow left after a recent storm. It was promptly plowed and sedulously shoveled away by the energetic DPW team. Photo by Gary Leveille.
