The village of Monterey had its own Mobil Gas station when the photograph above was taken in the 1930s. A careful examination shows a prized elm tree growing through the porch roof of the home in the background. Speeding through town was apparently a problem even back then. A sign on the back of an old pickup truck states “This Is God’s Country, So Don’t Go Like Hell.” Looking east, the same present-day view is shown below.
