THEN & NOW: Memorial Day in South County

As Daniel Webster once wrote, “Let their remembrance be as lasting as the land they honored.”

Memorial Day ceremonies and parades are held to honor and remember all of the veterans who gave up their lives for our country. May their sacrifice never be forgotten. As Daniel Webster once wrote, “Let their remembrance be as lasting as the land they honored.” The 2025 Memorial Day photograph above, and those from the past shown below, feature veterans participating in various parades and ceremonies over past decades in southern Berkshire County.

THEN: James Parrish, Diane Fratalone, and Fuller Walker gather in North Egremont during the late 1960s to begin preliminary preparations for the 1976 bicentennial celebration of the Knox Trail expedition. The Knox Trail is a network of roads and paths which traces the route of Colonel Henry Knox’s legendary caravan of cannons and artillery from Lake Champlain to a Continental Army camp overlooking Boston Massachusetts in the early days of the American Revolutionary War.
