The festive lights of the holiday season have brightened Main Street in Great Barrington for many years.

The festive lights of the holiday season have brightened Main Street in Great Barrington for many years. The vintage photograph shown above was taken looking north in the late 1930s. A 1937 Pontiac is shown in the right foreground.

To improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents, a push began in the late 1950s to change from diagonal to parallel parking. The pros and cons were pondered and argued for over 15 years, but the change was finally made in 1972.

The present-day view of Main Street show below was taken on Christmas Eve.
