THEN & NOW: ‘Gasoline Alley’ along Route 71

During the first half of the 20th century, there were five gas stations along a six-mile stretch from North Egremont, north along Route 71 to the Route 22 intersection.

The Blue Top Service Station was located just north of the Green River, N.Y. hamlet at the Austerlitz, N.Y. town line. The station name is presumably because the tile roof was painted blue. The above photograph was taken in the 1920s and shows two globe-top gas pumps out front.

During the first half of the 20th century, there were five gas stations along a six-mile stretch from North Egremont, north along Route 71 to the Route 22 intersection. Once known as “Gasoline Alley,” there were gas pumps at the North Egremont store, at a station in Alford, and at three stations in Green River. The Alford and two Green River stations are now private homes. The Blue Top station was located near the present-day Circle Museum Sculpture Garden shown below.
