THEN & NOW: Downtown Great Barrington

Thanks to the hard work of the town’s DPW, Main Street was quickly cleared after the most recent snowstorm.

An unknown photographer added a playful title to the 1920s snow-filled view of downtown Great Barrington shown above. A closer view of the same photograph reveals several advertising signs, including a banner which reads “Entering Great Barrington – Gateway of the Berkshires.” The town of Lee later adopted a similar “Gateway” phrase after the Massachusetts Turnpike opened in 1957.

A present-day photograph looking north is shown in the bottom view. Thanks to the hard work of the town’s DPW, Main Street was quickly cleared after the most recent snowstorm.
