Great Barrington — Abdalla’s Market opened on North Main Street during the 1920s. The photograph shown above was taken in 1961 during the town’s bicentennial celebration. The building was erected in 1826 by Charles Taylor and Daniel Ives, making it the oldest surviving commercial building in town. The hand-made bricks were cast in a brickyard located near Stockbridge Road (then Pixley Street).
This year, Domaney’s Liquors celebrates its 50th anniversary at the site. In 1973, Joseph Domaney purchased the former Abdalla’s Market. A family connection remains since Joseph’s wife, Dolores’ maiden name is Abdalla. When Joe passed away in 1986, son Edward Domaney took over operation of the store.

A twin three-story addition was erected in 1995 on the north side of the original building. Carefully designed by architect Janos Kerseru, it is difficult to tell which side is the older structure. The present-day photograph below features owners Ed and Joe Domaney. An eager shopper also stepped into the shot while the photographer was standing on a tall ladder.
