The questions below have been answered by the seller.
What’s the most compelling thing about this property?
Its colorful ninety-year history in music, eccentricity and joy is certainly compelling, but to me it is the location – in the middle of the forest, yet close enough to everything Berkshire. As I’ve said, I grew up in LA and I’m used to driving to get anywhere, but here in the Berkshires the traffic is minimal, the air is clean and the views are spectacular!
For whom is this house perfect?
I picture a visionary entrepreneur who will love the place as much as I do, and who can see and realize all of the potential that I failed to. Someone with as much drive and perspicacity as me, but with a much better head for business and the talent to move other people’s money… I have put twenty-five years into making sure the Dream Away holds its place in the community’s sense of self. I dream of the driven smarty who can capitalize on that in the coming age and grow the spirit of the Dream Away, past, present and future…
What’s the most fun thing to do within five miles of this house?
Well, the first answer is, of course, The Dream Away! The music, the food, the bar, the gardens. And that’s why people love it! Beyond that, the Dream Away sits in the center of the largest state forest in Massachusetts, prolly enuf said in and of itself, but my particular nearby favorites are kayaking on Buckley Dunton Reservoir, hiking along the Keystone Arches, or taking an ice cold summer plunge in the gorge off of Brooker Hill Rd.
If this house could talk, what secret would it tell about its history?
I have had many late night talks with Mamma’s spirit over twenty-five years, and to me she’s always had something to say. So many adventures and parties and personalities here. A psychic friend of mine once reminded me that it was a whorehouse; people were here to have fun. Some of my favorite musicians have had songs come to them in dreams at the lodge; some have fallen in love here. There have been unbelievable secret parties that raged all night and weddings that ended in drunken disasters. There have been plays and readings and cabaret and burlesque, tea dances and funerals and motorcycle gangs and red hat ladies. And that Dylan thing, it has legs. This house holds history and keeps it alive. It is my hope that it will continue to do so.
