To the editor:
If TDS is not a recognized mental disorder, it should be.
Donald Trump may win in November. That possibility has resulted in many of my friends in southern Berkshire County becoming unhinged. The regular columnists for The Berkshire Edge have gone into a downward spiral of despair. They now don’t just describe Trump as bad; they openly liken him to Hitler and believe our democratic system is doomed if he wins. Seriously? Seriously?
There is a threat to democracy right now, but it is not posed by Donald Trump. It is the left’s relentless campaign to shut down all dissenting opinion by calling it misinformation or disinformation or hate speech.
(Case in point: I was permanently banned from Egremont Neighbors for criticizing people who insist—not request but insist—that they be called by their preferred pronouns. So the person who banned me has successfully stifled views, including political views, that she finds uncomfortable or disagreeable.)
If Harris wins, most of us who voted the other way will strive hard to overcome that result in the next election. That is the way the system is supposed to work. And we will resist the left’s continuing efforts to change the rules of our democracy so that they can get their way by any means. If Trump wins, I don’t see any possibility that the left will accept the result. Rather, they will again use law-fare and fabricated information to undermine him.
So tell me again. Who is the threat to democracy?
Richard Allen
