TECH TALK: Winter heating tech

Two very straightforward actions can make a huge difference in your comfort and your costs.

The average life expectancy of a home heating furnace is 15 to 20 years, depending on circumstance. Some can last for as little as 10. A key measure of expectancy is Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE). Modern furnaces are 95 percent efficient. Old furnaces, particularly those built before the 1990s, are generally considered very inefficient, with efficiency ratings often falling between 56 and 70 percent. In the Berkshires, where many of the houses are old, average annual heating bills in the Berkshires are between $2000 and $4000. Replacements cost between $3,000 and $7,000 depending on whether your price comes from the supplier or a contractor.

In colder climates like the Berkshires, furnaces may experience increased wear due to extended use during harsh winters. This can potentially shorten their lifespan compared to regions with milder climates. Yes, there are other options, such as electrical, gas, solar, and heat pump systems, but changing systems from one type to another can also be very costly, especially in the winter when most furnaces fail. The fact is that if you have a $3000 heating bill and it costs $5000 to replace your furnace, this will pay for itself in a few years. Bottom line: Most of us in the Berkshires are wasting a lot of energy and spending a lot to do it.

Windows are another potential energy saver, but they are significantly more expensive than a furnace and much more complicated to install. You can get an estimate on a furnace in a day, acquire it in a few days, and be up and running after just a one-day installation. Start to finish—about a week, unless it is Christmas and New Year’s.

There is an even simpler, cost-effective winter heating improvement, and that is to add a Smart Thermostat. These can save between 10 and 20 percent of your heating bill, take an hour to install, and cost on average with installation under $400 in Berkshire County. These typically pay for themselves in a single year.

When combining a new furnace and a new thermostat, both of which can be installed on the same day, homeowners can save between 30 and 50 percent of their heating bill.

Thermostats have changed. Some are WiFi-connected and smartphone controllable. Howard Lieberman created this image with ChatGPT 4o, an AI software program.

We can investigate options for months or years, calculating tradeoffs and numerous options. The landscape changes constantly. Still, one thing is certain: saving between 30 and 50 percent of your heating bill with a single day’s installation is an awfully compelling proposition.

Dealing with an old furnace can feel like wrestling with a grumpy old bear. Between constant repairs, skyrocketing energy bills, and those mysterious rattles and bangs, it’s easy to wish you had a magic wand to make it all disappear. But here’s the good news: a new furnace can make life so much simpler. Modern systems are not only more reliable but also much more efficient, meaning you’ll get better warmth at a lower cost. Imagine not having to worry about your heating bill every month or spending your weekends fixing something that should be working just fine. A little maintenance here and there, and your new system will keep running like a dream for 15-20 years.

These two changes create a big win! Howard Lieberman created this image with ChatGPT 4o, an AI software program.

Now, let’s talk about thermostats. Remember the good old days of turning that dial on the Honeywell thermostat and hoping it would get the temperature just right? Today’s smart thermostats are a whole different ball game. With features like remote control from your phone, automatic adjustments based on your schedule, and even energy-saving algorithms, your new thermostat practically takes care of everything for you. It’s like having a personal assistant for your home’s temperature. Plus, no more worrying about forgetting to turn down the heat before bed—your thermostat will do it for you. It’s the perfect companion for those who appreciate comfort without all the fuss.

In the end, upgrading to a modern furnace and thermostat is a win-win. You’ll enjoy consistent warmth, lower energy bills, and a lot less hassle. No more dealing with the headaches of an old system that’s constantly on the brink of breaking down. Whether it’s curling up with a good book in a cozy home or enjoying a peaceful night’s sleep without that noisy old furnace kicking in, a new system brings comfort and peace of mind. It’s an investment in your home and your quality of life, and honestly, who couldn’t use a little less stress and a little more comfort?
