LENOX — With Tanglewood’s capacity limits increasing from 25 percent to 50 percent, the Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced that additional Tanglewood tickets will go on sale Monday, June 21, at 10 a.m. Mask requirements have been dropped, and two popular artist concerts are back on the calendar. The only bad news is that James Taylor’s August 31 concert has been postponed until July 4, 2022. (The crowd he draws to Tanglewood is generally twice the 9,000-person limit the festival must adhere to during the 2021 season.)
The Boston Symphony Orchestra announced in early April their programming for the 2021 Tanglewood season. Soloists include Daniil Trifonov, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Joshua Bell, Yefim Bronfman, Wynton Marsalis, Leonidas Kavakos, and Baiba Skride.
A few Tanglewood 2021 highlights: Opening night at Tanglewood features Emanuel Ax performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor,” Anne-Sophie Mutter gives the world premier performance of John Williams’ second violin concerto on July 24, and Kirill Gerstein performs Stravinsky’s “Concerto for Piano and Winds” on July 31 under the baton of BSO Artistic Partner Thomas Adès.
Tanglewood Music Center chamber concerts will occur Sundays at 10 a.m. and Mondays at 2:30 p.m. throughout the 2021 season, which runs from July 9 through August 16. These concerts are given by world-class players at the beginning of their careers. They always amaze, and, against all odds, admission is free. So is lawn admission to all Tanglewood concerts for patrons under age 18. Year-round local residents may purchase a discounted season-long Berkshire Resident Lawn Pass.
